History of the Carmel Clarion Index

The Subject Index for the Carmel Clarion grew out of a request to OCDS communities from Fr. Regis Jordan, OCD (at that time, the Provincial Delegate), for formation materials that might be of service to the Washington Province OCDS. Elizabeth Pantas, OCDS, submitted a rudimentary, handwritten subject index that the former Flower of Carmel Community (Arden, NC) used to access the Clarion articles for research and enrichment purposes. The question posed itself as to how to make this subject index available to others.

With the help of Loretta Potts, OCDS (a librarian with knowledge of how to set up an index), Elizabeth, in collaboration with fellow OCDS Mary Ann Poli and Mary Rose Pearl, officially started the index as an apostolate of the Flower of Carmel Community with Fr. Regis’ permission. Elizabeth’s husband, Lee, designed and maintained a website, flowerofcarmel.org (no longer on the Web), that hosted the index for many years. He is very happy that his wife’s legacy will live on as part of the OCDS Provincial website and be of service to her fellow Secular Carmelites well into the future.

Susan Parker guided a member of her New York City OCDS community (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Teresa of Jesus) to complete indexing of the final Clarion years, 2018 - 2020. The cataloging was done by Edward Donnelly. Although Ed has a background in publishing, his efforts were a work of love and we cannot express our gratitude for all of his assistance. How blessed are we Carmelites to benefit from the generous time and talent of our fellow OCDS … and Elizabeth’s husband, Lee!
